I've been getting a lot of great concepts from the book "Good To Great" by Jim Collins lately. Another concept that this book talks about that has a huge application in network marketing is the concept of The Flywheel & The Doom Loop.
In the book, Jim Collins compares the companies that went from good to great to a flywheel. If you have a flywheel that is in a stationary position, it takes a tremendous amount of effort to get the flywheel to rotate one time. As you continue to push against the wheel and the wheel continues to turn, the wheel builds up momentum, so the second rotation is a little easier. The third rotation is easier still until eventually you hardly have to push against the wheel at all and the wheel continues to spin faster and faster in its own momentum.
This is exactly how network marketing works.
When you get started in network marketing, the biggest challenge is getting that first recruit. The second biggest challenge is finding the first recruit that will actually do something. However, as you continue to do the activities necessary to recruit and build an organization, it gets easier and easier until eventually your organization is so large, you don't have to do anything, yet you still have a team growing in your organization.
The Doom Loop, however, is a continuous cycle that the companies that never became great went through. In the doom loop, these companies were not happy with the results they were getting. As a result, instead of trying to understand why they weren't getting the results they were looking for, they would try to solve the problem by going in a new direction, program, leader, event, fad or acquisition. These constant changes caused them to have no buildup or momentum and, as a result, they would have disappointing results again. Thus, the cycle continues.
The Doom Loop is also a very common phenomenon in network marketing as well. A distributor gets started with a new company and is very excited. However, the distributor doesn't take the necessary steps to build a successful organization. Instead of the distributor figuring out why they aren't getting the results they are looking for, or giving themselves a reasonable amount of time to get the results, the distributor either tries to find a new way to build their business or they blame the company and join another company. By changing their activity or company, they aren't able to get the buildup and momentum and as a result get disappointing results. Thus the cycle continues until the distributor eventually gives up on the industry and says "network marketing doesn't work."
The flywheel is the only way to go to have success in network marketing.
How do you apply the flywheel to network marketing?
It's simple.
You need to find a system of prospecting, recruiting, selling and team building that you feel comfortable with implementing for yourself and your organization. You then need to consistently on a regular basis do the necessary activities to implement that system of prospecting, recruiting, selling and team building. Finally, you need to give your system time to get the results you are looking for.
What you don't want to do is constantly try to change your system or look for new ways to do things. What you definitely don't want to do is hop from company to company when you aren't getting the results you are looking for.
By following the flywheel approach and avoiding the doom loop, you will find yourself well on your way to having success in network marketing.
